DoH announce guidelines for single use of all endodontic instruments
The department of health have recommended that all files (very thin, hand held nickel titanium instruments used for cleaning and shaping during root canal treatment ) should be disposed of after use rather than being sterilised for re-use. This is to eradicate the extremely small potential risk of cross infection of vCJD.
We are awaiting further advice from the BDA, but have implemented a policy of single use files in the interim.
Reception makeover complete
The refurbishment to our reception and waiting room is now complete. With new seating, flooring, reception desk and storage facilities, we hope you agree that the new look is fantastic. Our new accent colour of pink, reflected in the decor and uniforms has brought a smile to many faces.
New NHS contract
The new NHS contract introduced in April 2006 is proving to be as disappointing as most dentists had predicted. Far from easing access to NHS dentistry, it has caused an increase in waiting times, a shift away from prevention towards short term fixes, and has been to the patients' clinical and cost detriment. The Primary Care Trust (PCT) now allocates each dental practice a limited number of 'units of dental activity'( UDAs). Each check up is one unit, which also includes a scale and polish if necessary. There are two additional units for all fillings, root fillings, extractions etc, per course of treatment. Under this new system the patient charge is the same whether they need one, two or ten fillings. Crowns and dentures carry twelve units, and again the patient pays the same fee, regardless of quantity of treatment required.
Like many other practices we anticipate that our NHS allocation of UDAs will run out very shortly. This is because of an under funding of NHS dentistry, and fewer units of activity being allocated than will fulfill the clinical needs of our patients. The PCT is hoping that dentists will lengthen the recall periods from six monthly, to up to two yearly. We feel that this could lead to undiagnosed problems and greater treatment needs for the future, and are assessing every patients needs carefully. The new NHS contract does not now fund our hygienist who continues to see patients on a private only basis.
Once the UDAs are completed we will no longer be able to offer NHS dentistry of any kind until the next round of allocations in April 2008. Please be aware that all our dentists will be available during this time on a private only basis.
In the event of there being a shortfall in UDAs, the PCT has indicated that it will be unable to fund additional units as every dental practice is in a similar position.
Nationally, Denplan have received a large increase in applications to join their monthly payment plans, as a direct result of the new NHS contract leaving patients concerned over lack of registration and emergency cover.
We will endeavor to keep our patients informed of any further changes.
